WHL This Week: Looking Ahead...


Calgary, AB – The 2009-10 Western Hockey League schedule enters the first weekend of play in December with 22 games on the schedule for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

 

This weekend, several WHL Clubs will hold their annual Teddy Bear and Toque Toss events.  WHL Clubs are aiming to break the record of 26,919 stuffed animals collected in Calgary last year.

 

Teddy Bear / Toque Toss events will be taking place on Friday night in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, while Chilliwack, Red Deer, Regina, Swift Current and Vancouver will all hold their events on Saturday night.

 

In Prince George, B.C., the Cougars continue their annual Christmas Campaign on Friday when they host the Kootenay Ice.  Fans are invited to donate gently used coats and jackets which will be distributed to kids in need by the Yellowhead Rotary Club of Prince George and the Salvation Army..

 

In Kent, WA, the Seattle Thunderbirds welcome the Lakewood Police Independent Guild to their contest on Saturday night versus the Everett Silvertips.  The Guild will be accepting donations which will go to the children of fallen officers in a trust.  The T-Birds are also offering all police officers four free tickets to the game.

 

In Spokane, WA, on Friday, the Chiefs begin a month-long campaign to encourage fans to donate unwrapped toys to Toys for Tots.  The organization will be in attendance for every Chiefs home game throughout the month of December.

 

 

10 WHL PLAYERS HEADED TO HOCKEY CANADA’S NJT SELECTION CAMP…

 

Regina, SK – Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) announced on Wednesday that 36 of Canada’s top junior-aged hockey players (born in 1990 or later) have been invited to take part in Canada’s National Junior selection camp from December 12-16, 2009 in Regina, Sask.

Among the 36 players invited, 10 are currently playing in the Western Hockey League, including 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship gold medalists Jordan Eberle and Colten Teubert, both members of the Regina Pats.  Brandon Wheat Kings line-mates Scott Glennie and Brayden Schenn have been invited to camp along with the Calgary Hitmen’s Martin Jones and Brandon Kozun, Kelowna Rockets forward Brandon McMillan, Moose Jaw Warriors defenceman Travis Hamonic, Spokane Chiefs captain Jared Cowen and Swift Current Broncos sniper Cody Eakin.  Over the past 10 years, WHL players have made up over 40% of Team Canada’s National Junior roster, and close to 60% of Team Canada’s defense corp.

TYLER JOHNSON AND LUKE WALKER NAMED TO TEAM USA PRELIMINARY ROSTER…

 

Toronto, ON – USA Hockey today announced out of Colorado Springs that nine CHL players have been named to the preliminary roster for the 2010 U.S. National Junior Team that will participate in a three-day pre-tournament training camp from December 17-19 in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

 

Spokane Chiefs forward Tyler Johnson and Portland Winterhawks forward Luke Walker are among the players named to the roster.  Johnson was a member of the 2009 squad as well.

FRIDAY NIGHT WHL HOCKEY LIVE ON SHAW…

 

Brendan Gallagher and the Vancouver Giants (18-9-1-2) host Brandon Kozun and the Calgary Hitmen (21-8-1-0) for a battle of Eastern and Western Conference leaders on Friday night.

 

Friday’s contest between the Giants and Hitmen can be seen live throughout western Canada on SHAW (7:30pm PST).

 

The Giants suffered a 6-2 loss at the hands of the visiting Kootenay Ice on Wednesday night, snapping their three-game winning streak, but remain in first place in the B.C. Division and Western Conference standings.  The Giants are 12-7 at home, but have dropped three of their last four home games.  Gallagher has piled up seven goals and 12 points in his last five games.

 

The Hitmen are coming off a 6-5 victory in Prince George over the Cougars on Wednesday for their second straight victory after dropping their previous three games, and now sit tied with Saskatoon for first place in the Eastern Conference and top spot, overall, in the WHL.  The Hitmen are 12-5-1-0 on the road this season.  Kozun enjoyed a four-point outing on Wednesday night in Prince George, upping his WHL-leading point total to 55 points.

 

It’s the second of three meetings this season between the Giants and Hitmen.  The Hitmen blanked the Giants 2-0 in Vancouver on October 30th in the first encounter.  The teams meet up again in Calgary on January 9th.

WHL HOCKEY ON ROGERS SPORTSNET

Vancouver Giants @ Chilliwack Bruins; Sunday, Dec. 6.

 

The Vancouver Giants visit lower mainland rivals the Chilliwack Bruins on Sunday for the first Rogers Sportsnet broadcast WHL and CHL of the season (5:00pm PST; National).

 

The Giants currently lead the B.C. Division and Western Conference standings, and are gunning for their fifth straight B.C. Division title this season. 

 

The Bruins find themselves tied with Kelowna for second place in the B.C. Division, but trail the Giants by 10 points for the division lead.

 

Sunday’s meeting will be the fifth encounter of the season between the Giants and Bruins.  Vancouver won the first three meetings, but the Bruins pulled off a 6-1 victory in Vancouver in the most recent encounter on November 18th

 

The Giants host the Calgary Hitmen on Friday and the Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday while the Bruins welcome the Hitmen on Saturday before Sunday’s head-to-head clash.

Brandon Wheat Kings @ Prince Albert Raiders

Friday, December 4th

 

Brandon Herrod and the Prince Albert Raiders (16-12-1-2) welcome Matt Calvert and the Brandon Wheat Kings (18-11-0-2) for a battle between East Division rivals and two of the hottest teams in the Eastern Conference on Friday night.

 

The Raiders handed visiting Swift Current a 7-4 loss on Wednesday night to stretch their winning streak to four games, and have climbed into third place in the highly competitive East Division.  The Raiders have posted a solid 11-4-1-2 record since October 20th, including an 8-1-0-1 mark one home ice in that span.  Herrod has goals in each of his last six games, and netted a hat trick in Wednesday’s win over the Broncos.

 

The Wheat Kings are coming off a big 7-2 win over the visiting Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday for their fifth victory in their last six games, and currently sit three points ahead of the Raiders for second place in the division.  The Wheat Kings have scored 123 goals this season for the second-best offensive output of any WHL team.  Calvert scored two goals in Wednesday’s win over the Blades, including his 20th of the season.

 

It’s the third meeting of the season between the Wheat Kings and Raiders.  The Raiders won both previous meetings versus the Wheat Kings, outscoring them 10-1 in the process.
